THOSE WERE THE DAYS MY FRIEND

A TALE OF TWO CITIES


London, March 17th 1968 : Tariq Ali and Vanessa Redgrave lead the historic demo against the Vietnam War called by the Vietnam Solidarity Campaign. The preceding demo, in October 1967, was, for this blogger, more spontaneous and exciting. On one occasion (October or March ?) I was photographed by a Nudes of the World hack standing next to Tariq at a bookstall at the London School of Economics, which had been occupied for the occasion. The photo appeared on the front page. For the next few months, my nickname at the Comprehensive School where I had just started teaching was 'Tariq'.

Five days later, in Paris, Daniel Cohn-Bendit and others form the 'Mouvement du 22 mars' in response to the arrest of six anti-Vietnam War militants...
